A sapphire’s origin describes the deposit or geographic region in which it formed and was recovered. It does not dictate a single colour, tone or quality.
Sri Lanka / Ceylon
Sri Lanka has a long history of sapphire recovery and produces corundum across a broad colour range. Some material has blue–green or teal appearances, alongside better-known blues, yellows and other colours. Sri Lankan sapphires are often described in general terms as lighter or brighter, but those tendencies cannot identify an individual stone.

Australia
Australia is strongly associated with basalt-related sapphire deposits and with stones in blue, green and mixed blue–green colours. Many are medium to dark in tone, sometimes with distinctive zoning. Yet Australian material is diverse: not every stone is dark, and not every dark teal stone is Australian.
Good cutting is particularly important for deeper material, where orientation and proportions can determine whether the finished stone appears rich and lively or overly dark.
Madagascar
Madagascar became an important modern sapphire source through discoveries in several regions. Its deposits have yielded a wide variety of sapphire colours and qualities, including blue–green material. As with other countries, “Madagascan” is geographic information, not a colour grade.
Montana
Montana in the United States has several sapphire-producing areas. Montana sapphires are associated in the market with nuanced colours that can include blue, green, grey-blue and blue–green. Deposit, treatment and individual appearance should be considered separately rather than assuming a uniform “Montana teal”.
Can you identify origin by colour?
No—not reliably. Overlap between sources is substantial. Lighting, cut, tone, zoning and treatment can further change visual impressions. Claims such as “this must be Ceylon because it is bright” or “this must be Australian because it is dark” are not adequate identification.
A specialist gemmological laboratory may provide an origin opinion using microscopic inclusions, growth structures, spectroscopy, trace-element data and comparison with reference material. Sometimes the evidence is insufficient for a conclusion. An origin opinion should be read together with the report’s wording and limitations.
Does origin determine value?
Documented origin can influence market demand in some parts of the sapphire trade, but it is only one factor.
