Teal sapphire is not a single standard colour. It is a family of natural sapphire appearances in which blue and green are both visible—sometimes evenly balanced, sometimes with one clearly dominant.

What is a teal sapphire?

Sapphire is the gem variety of corundum, crystalline aluminium oxide. Pure corundum is colourless; trace elements and their interactions create colour. Red corundum is called ruby, while the other colours belong to the sapphire family. “Teal” is a descriptive trade and consumer term for blue–green sapphire, rather than a formal gemmological variety.

That distinction matters. Two sellers may use teal for slightly different colour boundaries. Evaluate the actual stone rather than assuming the name guarantees a specific hue.

What causes the teal colour?

Blue and green colour in sapphire is associated with trace-element chemistry and charge-transfer processes within the corundum crystal. Iron and titanium are important contributors to many blue sapphires; iron-related processes can contribute green or yellow components. The exact chemistry and appearance are more complex than a simple pigment mixture, and should not be inferred from a photograph alone.

Hue, tone and saturation

Hue describes the basic colour impression and modifying colours. Tone describes relative lightness or darkness. Saturation describes colour strength. Colour zoning and pleochroism

Growth conditions can produce zones with different colour concentrations. Careful cutting may integrate them attractively or make them conspicuous. Pleochroism is different: because sapphire is doubly refractive, different crystal directions can show different colours or colour strengths. A cutter considers orientation to achieve the most appealing face-up result.

Crystal structure, inclusions and clarity

Natural sapphires commonly contain internal features. These may include healed fissures, mineral crystals, fine needles, growth structures or colour zoning. Inclusions can provide evidence that a stone is natural and may assist laboratory interpretation, but their type and appearance vary.

Clarity should be judged in context. Ask whether an inclusion distracts without magnification, weakens a vulnerable area, or affects transparency. A clean-looking stone need not be completely free of inclusions, and an included stone can remain beautiful if the features are unobtrusive.

Practical viewing tip: inspect the stone face-up at normal viewing distance before using magnification. Jewellery is experienced with the eye, while magnification helps explain what the eye sees.

Cut, brilliance and carat weight

Cut controls how efficiently light returns to the viewer and how colour is distributed. A well-considered cut can enliven a medium or dark teal; a poor one can leave a transparent “window” through the centre or large black-looking areas of extinction.

Windowing and extinction

Windowing occurs when light passes through instead of returning from the pavilion, often making the setting or background visible through the centre. Extinction refers to areas that remain dark because of cutting, orientation or lighting. Some contrast gives a faceted stone pattern; large dead areas may reduce liveliness.

Shape, proportions and dimensions

Oval, cushion, round, pear and emerald-style cuts can all suit teal sapphire. There is no universally best shape. Proportions, symmetry and optical performance matter more than the outline name. Compare millimetre dimensions as well as weight: two one-carat sapphires may face up at noticeably different sizes because one carries more depth.

Treatments: heated vs unheated

Heating is a long-established sapphire treatment used to modify colour and/or clarity. It is accepted in the gemstone trade when disclosed. The degree and conditions of heating can vary, so a simple “heated” label covers more than one process.

Unheated means a qualified laboratory found no evidence of heat treatment within its testing limits. Attractive unheated sapphires may receive additional market interest, but unheated status alone does not make a stone superior. Beauty, cut, size, clarity and demand remain relevant. Ask for precise disclosure and avoid vague phrases such as “natural colour” unless their meaning is made clear.

Origins and identification

Blue–green sapphires may come from Sri Lanka, Australia, Madagascar, Montana and other deposits. Each source can produce a range of appearances. General tendencies are not identification rules: an Australian stone need not be dark, and a bright stone is not necessarily Sri Lankan.

Certification and laboratory reports

In everyday language people say “certificate”, but laboratories usually issue an identification report. Depending on the service and findings, it may state species and variety, whether the stone is natural, indications of treatment and sometimes an origin opinion.

A report does not grade beauty or guarantee commercial value. Check the issuing laboratory, report number, stone measurements and identifying details. For a higher-value or unusually represented stone, independent documentation may meaningfully reduce uncertainty.

Durability and jewellery suitability

Corundum ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, resisting scratching better than most gems. Hardness is not toughness: a forceful knock can still chip an edge, especially near a fissure or exposed point. Protective settings, sensible wear and periodic inspection help.

What influences value?

There is no universal teal price chart. Colour attractiveness, hue balance, tone, saturation, cut quality, visible size, clarity, treatment status, documentation, origin where credibly established, and current demand all interact. A larger stone with weak cutting is not automatically preferable to a smaller, lively one.

Price comparison works best between genuinely similar stones. Compare full dimensions and face-up appearance; establish whether tax, reports, delivery or setting are included; and give personal appeal appropriate weight.

Photographs are interpretations influenced by lighting, camera processing and screen calibration. Look for imagery from several angles, neutral backgrounds and video. Ask how the colour behaves in daylight and warm indoor light. Confirm dimensions, treatment, returns, shipping insurance and whether the actual pictured stone is being sold.
